I was glad to have my camera setup and ready sensing something magical could happen.  My hunch proved correct as the sun briefly broke through the storm clouds to cast a deep red glow on the mountainsides. late June is a beautiful place to be.  The azaleas bloom out and attract lots of hikers.  Above, I show the trail as it weaves its way through this clearing to the great views beyond.   However, this image almost didn't happen.  About three-quarters of a mile from the trailhead, my hiking partner and I started to hear thunder rumbling in this distance.  A storm was approaching but whether it would strike us head on I didn't know.  We committed to finishing the hike -be it soaking wet or dry.  Fortunately, the storm took a path that dodged Andrews Bald and instead provided a dramatic backdrop to the orange-red azaleas in bloom.   Pressing ahead that day payed off with a great image and a great time. Ohio River which contains one of the largest arches East of the Mississippi River.  It was also one the tragic stopping sites along the Trail of Tears for the Cherokee in 1838.  This image is about color, rock lines and light-play converging.  Here on the right, the edge of Mantle Rock (which more accurately should be called Mantle Arch) rests closely to another large stone ridge.  I kind of think of it as my Kentucky  "makeshift-verison"  of the slot canyons so frequently photographed out in Arizona.  Here the yellows, greens and browns substitute for the reds and oranges found in the Shrouded Autumn, peak fall colors are enveloped by the low-lying clouds from a clearing storm.  Either mood, the warm colors of the season or the cool tones of the storm, could stand on their own in making a pleasing image.  Combining the two, however, really added a contrast and a drama that my eye naturally responded to.  Moments like these are exciting to us photographer- types, mainly because long in photographing this time out.  I was attracted to the blue sky dotted with small white clouds and how it contrasted well with the snow drifts produced by the raging wind.  Despite the blue skies this image, it just seemed to be perfect for display in black and white.  The texture of the wind-driven snow and openess of the landscape perfectly tell the story of place and time, hence the title of this image. spring Smokies visit was over.  Morton Overlook is "best" done as a summer shot according to photo guides I've read, citing how the sun's postion at sunset falls nicely into a scenic composition.  As this shot shows, anytime can be scenic when you are prepared and God so wills.  The storm here was breaking up and the setting sun's rays found the ground only once.  I was ready and fired off several frames.  In an instant, this light show was over and little drama followed for the rest of the evening.  F/8 and be there-indeed!!  Great Smoky Mountains National Park was the only thing beautiful about the ice storm that struck the region.  After passing through, over 700,000 customers were without power for days and some weeks.  I was determined, even in the midst of coping with cold and no power, to capture some of the ice scenes about me.  I was reminded that "bad" weather many times sets up unique conditions for "good" photography.  Caldwell County, Kentucky the Eastern Sierra, this photograph was captured early on a cold windy morning.  A friend and I were looking for possible compositions as the sun rose in the eastern distance.  Just about that time it started snowing as well in that direction.  This led to rich light on the Buttermilk rocks as well as an interesting sky, as you just may get a "feel" of the snow falling in the right horizon portion of the image. some time spent scouting, as I walked up and down the river searching for some red reflected autumn color in the water that wasn't so "busy" with river debris.  Finally I found this scene.  The current was gentle enough to just show the texture of the water breaking around the rock - its color helping to accentuate the rest of the color in the image. Federal and Confederate troops battled to decide here, on October 8, 1862, who would control Kentucky. 7600 men fell that day to answer the question.  Cannons such as these remain to remind the casual visitor of the blood, faith, sweat, and tears that were and are required to make America what she is today.  This one was shot before sunset in silhouette against the sky and clouds. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park https://www.jeremybrasher.com/photo/fog-over-duncan-lake/ https://www.jeremybrasher.com/images/xl/Working-Foggy-Ducan.jpg Fog Over Duncan Lake Early morning light meets thick fog that had settled over the lake.  Windless conditions led to the mirror-like reflection in the water.  Upon returning to this site later to photograph again, the trees had fallen over.  This was a few days after remnant winds of Hurricane Ike had wreaked havoc throughout Western Kentucky.     Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area https://www.jeremybrasher.com/photo/cumberlands-skylight-cave/ https://www.jeremybrasher.com/images/xl/Cumberland-Lit-Rocks.jpg Cumberland's Skylight Cave This image was taken inside the cave looking out into the summer forest.  Some previous visitors had made a campfire inside the cave.  I decided to try and make an interesting foreground element out of them.  Shooting on my stomach and using a flashlight gave me the proper composition and lighting aid to make the image work.  Cumberland Gap National Historical Park https://www.jeremybrasher.com/photo/sunset-over-kentucky-lake/ https://www.jeremybrasher.com/images/xl/Kentucky-Lake-Sunset.jpg Sunset Over Kentucky Lake Saturated colors dominated this sunset, as viewed across Kentucky Lake from Land Between the Lakes.   Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area https://www.jeremybrasher.com/photo/mantle-rock-petrogylphs/ https://www.jeremybrasher.com/images/xl/Mantle-Rock.jpg Mantle Rock Petrogylphs Near Kentucky's border with Illinois are many boulders, cliffs, rock shelters and signs of native peoples who inhabited the area centuries ago, an area known to few as the Shawnee Hills.  These particular petroglyphs are examples of evidence left.  I had previsualized something like the image you see here months before I actually ventured out to photograph.  It took four trips into the preserve to get the right light.  I shot early on a July morning, using a long exposure, giving myself time to light some of the drawings with the orange glow of my flashlight.  What are the petroglyphs of?  I say a hen turkey, what do you think? Mantle Rock Nature Preserve https://www.jeremybrasher.com/photo/autumn-over-pinnacle-overlook/ https://www.jeremybrasher.com/images/xl/Cumberland-Fog-Scenic.jpg Autumn Over Pinnacle Overlook Early morning fog rolls over the Cumberland Gap.  The fall colors of 2004 were especially vibrant in southeastern Kentucky when this image was made.  Experiencing this location at his time of year and day makes for a beautiful scene to behold as well as photograph.    Cumberland Gap National Historical Park https://www.jeremybrasher.com/photo/bad-branch-falls/ https://www.jeremybrasher.com/images/xl/Bad-Branch-Falls-Master.jpg Bad Branch Falls This image of Bad Branch Falls was captured in late spring, as the waterfall was roaring.   This portion of the Bad Branch river is designated as a Kentucky "wild river. "  The water spray caused by the falls limited how close I could approach.  After finding a pleasing composition, it took some time to position my tripod. The result is what you see here.  The day I was there was very peaceful and quiet (except for the roar, of course).   I didn't encounter a single soul during the hike.
